Gap Inc. is a long-standing partner with WaterAid India. Since the inception of the project in 2015 there have been significant advances in the project’s four core focus areas: community mobilisation, water security, strengthening local governance and hygiene promotion in 16 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in Budni, Madhya Pradesh.
In 2018, the primary objective has been to strengthen previous year’s intervention for long-term impact. With our efforts, communities in Budni have much improved access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.
The partnership focuses on meeting the following objectives:
- Establish models of community based water management.
- Improve quality of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) planning under the government initiated Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) and influence the design and processes of GPDP at the district and state level.
- Strengthen the promotion of WASH by enhancing capacities of anganwadi workers.
During the course of our intervention in Budni, we have had some great learnings. It is now time to apply these learnings to practice and hence scale up the impact to the district level in Sehore.
In Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh we aim to sustain the open defecation free (ODF) status in 21 panchayats. To address the water, sanitation, and hygiene needs of the community we intend to empower local institutions, promote better inter-departmental coordination (at the government level), improve WASH access for the most marginalised, and strengthen community level institutions to take leadership.
