HSBC and WaterAid have come together to ensure access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene in six districts of the Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The project area comprises a mix of rural and urban regions, including tribal communities in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh and semi-urban areas like Durg in Chhattisgarh. The three yearlong project aims to ensure leadership in management of WASH services.
Through the partnership, we aim to improve water, sanitation and hygiene services in villages and slums, by reaching out to the most marginalised communities and ensuring long-term solutions for water security. Community managed models, such as the solid and liquid waste management centre in Chhattisgarh are being set up. Therefore, a cadre of leaders, mobilisers, and technical experts are trained at the communities to lead, sustain and replicate models of behaviour change.
The project also entails facilitation of village council meetings along with the communities and Government functionaries. District and citywide campaigns are also organised on generating public awareness and action on sustainable and inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene services.
Our programme with HSBC is evolving. In 2017 HSBC launched their new sustainability strategy which has a key focus area of sustainable supply chains. Together, HSBC and WaterAid are driving action towards a shared ambition of a sustainable future – focusing on the sustainability of global supply chains in the apparel sector and the wellbeing of workers, through the new project launched in 2018.
